A new sign language

The borough of Côte-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Grâce has just installed a new type of public billboard; the prototype, which will be tested over the next few weeks, is the work of designers Antoine Laverdière and Cédric Sportes. You may recognize their names from the playful furniture they created with the Modesdemploi collective and, more recently, from another type of billboard they created for the Quartier des spectacles.

The main idea behind the concept was to create a structure that would allow people to post their signs without charge or go-between and without glue, staples or Scotch tape.

The designers created a post, made from recycled materials and requiring little assembly, that contain plastic slots where the signs slide in. Their 45 degree angle, not only creates an eye-catching visual, but also allows for portrait or landscape formats.

The structure will be tested for approximately four weeks. And, if all goes well, the installation of additional billboards will happen in 2008.
